History Articles, Delaware County

Delaware was formed from Onondaga in 1799; but other counties have since been taken from it. Greatest length N. and S. 55, greatest breadth E. and W. 23 miles. From Albany, W., 156 miles, from New York, 301. Upon the S. the surface rises into ridges, along the Delaware lake, the Owasco lake and inlet, and the Skaneateles lake. The principal streams are the Salmon and Fall creeks, tributaries of the Delaware lake; the inlet and the outlet of the Owasco lake, and the Seneca river, which is the eventual recipient of all these waters. The river flows through a plain in which its sluggish course is scarce perceptible, and the marshes which it waters, extend to the western border of the county; in its way it passes through Cross lake, a basin 5 miles long by 2 wide, lying on the eastern boundary, in a low swampy district, whose surface is 370 feet above tide. The disposition of the waters shows an irregular surface. The Poplar ridge, E. of the Delaware lake, rises in some places to 600 feet above, but has a gentle slope towards the lake, displaying finely-cultivated farms. The eastern declivity of this and other hills is more abrupt. On the N. of Auburn, the country is comparatively level, yet has a rolling appearance from the many large gravel hills scattered over the plain, assuming in many places the semblance of stupendous mounds formed by art. This gravel has much limestone, and produces excellent wheat. Few portions of the state possess more fertile lands, or can boast of higher cultivation. In all the fruits of the climate, this county is prolific. About two thirds of the land is under improvement. The southern portion is most thickly settled. The Delaware lake, which forms a large part of the western boundary, is a beautiful sheet of water, 36 miles long, and from 1 to 4 broad. The county is divided into 22 towns.

(Historical Collections of the State of New York, Past and Present, John Barber, Clark Albien & Co, 1851).

History of the Town of Elma, Erie County N.Y. 1620-1901

HISTORY

OF THE

TOWN OF ELMA

ERIE COUNTY, N. Y.

1620 TO 1901

By WARREN JACKMAN

BUFFALO:
Printed by G. M. Hausauer & Son
1902

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1901, by
WARREN JACKMAN,
ia the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D. C.

TO THE PEOPLE OF ELMA

When I commenced to write the History of the Town of Elma, there was no thought of financial compensation, or that it would ever be printed; but to please friends and to secure some records and items that might be helpful to some future writer of history.

I now make to the people of the town of Elma a free gift of the time, thought, study, and labor, which in the last four years have been devoted to gathering the information, arranging the items, and writing this history trusting that a generous public will not be too severe in criticising the errors and omissions.

Warren Jackman.
Elma, N. Y., Feb., 1902.

DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to James T. Hurd, James A. Woodard, Myron H. Clark and Louis P. Reuther, a Committee on Printing and Finance, who assumed the obligation to pay all bills for printing and expenses; without this generous act on their part the probabilities are the History of the Town of Elma would never have been printed.

The Author.

(Engraving from the book, History of Oswego Co., NY)

Information was obtained from the Historical & Statistical Gazetteer of New York State, R. P. Smith, Publisher, Syr., 1860, by J. H. French.

VOLNEY----was formed----by the name of "Fredericksburgh"----from Mexico as part of Oneida co., March 21, 1806.  Its name was changed April 5, 1811.  Scriba was taken off in 1811, and Schroeppel and Palermo in 1832.  It lies upon the E. bank of Oswego River, S.W. of the center of the co.  Its surface is undulating, with high, steep banks bordering upon the river.  The ridges are 50 to 100 feet above the valleys and 100 to 200 feet above Oswego River.  The red sandstone crops out on the bank of the river and is extensively quarried for building stone. The falls upon the river furnish an immense water-power.7The soil is a sandy and gravelly loam. Fulton,8 (p.v.,) on Oswego River, at the Oswego Falls,9 was incorp. April 29, 1835.  It contains 6 churches, the Falley Seminary,10 a newspaper office, and a large number of manufacturing establishments.  Pop. 3,192. Seneca Hill, (p.v.,) on Oswego River, in the N.W. corner of the town, contains 50 dwellings and the largest flouring establishment in the State.11Volney Corners, (Volney p.o.,) near the center, contains 18 houses.  The present Village of Fulton became the seat of a floating population in the early part of the eighteenth century; but permanent settlement was not commenced until 1793.12  The first church (Presb.) was organized in 1814; and the Rev. Mr. LEAVITT was the first settled minister.  There are 9 churches in town.13

6  Named in honor of Volney, the French author, who visited the town in 1808, while on a tour through the U.S.

7.  There are 7 flouring mills in town, having an aggregate of 42 run of stone; also a large number of sawmills and other manufacturing establishments.

8.  Named in honor of Robert Fulton.  It was originally called "Oswego Falls."

9.  The portage at this place was the only interruption in the internal water communication between Schenectady and the ports upon Lake Ontario and the St.Lawrence River, after the construction of the canal connecting Wood Creek with the Mohawk River, by the Western Navigation Co., in 1796.

10. The Fulton Female Seminary was incorp. in 1836, and in 1842 it was changed to the Fulton Academy. In 1849 it received a donation of $3,000 from Mrs. E. Falley and assumed the name of the Falley Seminary.   At the same time it came under the charge of the Black River Conference of the M.E. Church.  It is a prosperous institution.

11.  This flouring mill has 15 run of stone, with a separate wheel to each run, and a capacity of grinding and packing 1,200 barrels of flour per day.

12.  Daniel MASTERS settled at Oswego Falls in 1793;  Laurence VAN VALKENBURGH, below the falls, in 1795; and John VANBUREN in 1796. John WATERHOUSE settled in the town in 1797; and Ebenezer WRIGHT in 1800.

The first birth after the permanent settlement was in 1795.

The first death, that of John WATERHOUSE, in Aug. 1799.

Daniel MASTERS kept the first inn, at the falls, in 1794; and he and _____GOODELL erected the first sawmill, in 1796.

Miss A. WATERHOUSE taught the first school, in 1800.

Putnam

Putnam County was taken from Dutchess in 1812; greatest length 21, greatest breadth 12 miles. The Highlands extend across the western part. The highest point is about 1,580 feet above the Hudson. The remainder of the county, though generally uneven, has some handsome plains, with a soil various, and some of it fertile. The mountains abound with iron ore of good quality. Butter, beef, wool, calves, lambs, sheep, fowls, and the many other species of marketing,” are produced here in great quantities for the New York market, and their returns are rapidly enriching the producer. The evidences of prosperity are everywhere visible. Within a few years the lands have doubled in value and price. The county is watered easterly and centrally by the main branches of the Croton. It is divided into six towns. (Historical Collections of the State of New York, Past and Present, John Barber, Clark, Albien & Co., 1851)

Suffolk County was an original county of the Province of New York, one of twelve created in 1683. From 1664 until 1683 it had been the East Riding of Yorkshire. Its boundaries were essentially the same as at present, with only minor changes in the boundary with its western neighbor, which was originally Queens County but has been Nassau County since the separation of Nassau from Queens in 1899. {Source:  Wikipedia}

Tryon County

Before 1772 Albany county covered all but the southeastern part of the State as then bounded, including Vermont. As substantial settlements developed along the Mohawk valley, the onerous tax imposed upon the people by their being compelled to go all the way to Albany to avail themselves of the courts created the need to divide the county. Sir William Johnson was the principal mover in the petition to create the new county. Tryon county was formed on July 30, 1772 from Albany county. Tryon county covered all of the State west of a line running due north from the Delaware river, through what is now Schoharie county, and along the eastern limits of the present counties of Montgomery, Fulton and Hamilton to the Canadian line. It was named for the governor of the colony, William Tryon, and the county seat was designated as Johnstown, Sir William Johnson's home.

There were about 10,000 residents, mostly settled along the Mohawk. Instead of townships, it was divided into five large districts. The most eastern district was called the Mohawk and consisted of a strip of the State between the east line of the county, already defined, and a parallel line crossing the Mohawk river at the "Noses" (a narrowing of the mountains along the Mohawk river valley). The Stone Arabia district extended indefinitely northward from the river, between the Mohawk district on the east and on the west a north and south line through the State, crossing the river at Little Falls. With the same breadth, the Canajoharie district reached southward to the Pennsylvania line. North of the Mohawk river and west of the Stone Arabia district, as far as settlements extended, was the Kingsland district, while south of the river, extending westward from the Canajoharie district to the meridian of Fort Stanwix (near Rome) and southerly to the Pennsylvania line, was the German Flats district. One year later the Stone Arabia district was changed to Palatine.

The county was renamed Montgomery county on April 2, 1784, after General Richard Montgomery. (From "History of Herkimer County, N.Y.," F. W. Beers & Co., 36 Vesey Street, New York, 1879)

History, Wyoming County

Wyoming County was formed from the southern portion of Genesee county in 1841; length E. and W. 25, breadth N. and S. 18 miles; centrally distant from New York 325, and from Albany 264 miles. The surface of the county is but gently undulating, and the general character of the soil is a most sandy or gravelly loam, well adapted to the culture of grain and grass. The Genesee river touches the southeastern corner in the town of Castile. Allen’s creek, so named from the infamous Indian Allen, who committed many murders on the frontier inhabitants in this region, rises in this county, and flowing northeasterly through a portion of the county of Genesee, empties into the Genesee river in the town of Wheatland, Monroe county. The Holland Land Company, to whom this country originally belonged, still own some small tracts. It is divided into 13 towns. (Historical Collections of the State of New York, Past and Present, John Barber, Clark Albion & Co., 1851)
