VAN GELDER 

Harriet Jane VanGelder was born in Schuyler County, New York August 28, 1859.  Harriet died November 16, 1949 Canandaigua, New York, at 90 years of age.

CanandaiguaMrs. Harriet J. Gifford, 90, oldest member of Chapin Methodist Church, died unexpectedly yesterday, November 16, 1949, at the home of a son, R. Leslie Gifford, North Road, Canandaigua RD 4.

Canandaigua Mrs. Harriet J. Gifford, 90, oldest member of Chapin Methodist Church, died unexpectedly yesterday, Nov 16, 1949, at the home of a son, R. Leslie Gifford, North Road, Canandaigua RD 4. Mrs. Gifford, widow of Charles Gifford, was born August 28, 1859, and had always been a resident of New York State. Her parents were the late Alfred and Mary Dean VanGelder.  She lived in this vicinity many years and was active in church affairs until her death.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. H. C. Porreca, West Henrietta, two sons, R. Leslie Gifford, Canandaigua Town, and A. Morris Gifford, Canandaigua City, two brothers, J. Edgar VanGelder, California, and B. Emerson VanGelder, Wilmington, Del., also four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the Kennedy Funeral Chapel, this city, with the Rev. Robert Green, Chapin, and the Rev. Lloyd V. Moffit, Canandaigua, Methodist pastors officiating. Burial will be Woodlawn Cemetery, here.

GIFFORD  VANGELDER At Rochester, Wednesday April 5, 1893, by Rev. Peter Lindsay, Charles Gifford of Canandaigua, and Miss Harriet VanGelder of Chapinville.

                                    Charles was born in Pittstown December 1851.  Charles was the son of Nathaniel A. Gifford and Mary Sherman Douglass .  Charles died April 12, 1926 Canandaigua, New York, at 74 years of age.

Charles Gifford, age 75 years. -    The death of Charles Gifford aged 75 years, a retired farmer, occurred at his home on Granger Street Monday PM following a long illness. Mr. Gifford was born in Rensselear County, coming to Canandaigua when about 14 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie VanGelder Gifford, two sons and a daughter, Leslie and Morris Gifford and Miss Mabel Gifford of this city, also by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Keene and Mrs. Alonzo Mabbett of Rochester. Burial in Woodlawn.

  "Charles Gifford, aged 75 years, retired farmer, died at his home in Granger street this afternoon following a long illness. 

 He was born in Rensselaer County and came to Canandaigua when about 14 years of age.  He leaves his wife, two sons and a daughter, Leslie and Morris Gifford and Miss Mabel Gifford of this city; also two sisters, Mrs. Charles Keene and Mrs. Alonzo Mabbett of Rochester."  The other one says "Funeral services for Charles Gifford, who died at his home in Granger street yesterday afternoon, will be held from the residence tomorrow at 2:30, Rev. Stephen S. Pratt, of the Methodist church, officiating.  Interment in Woodlawn cemetery." 

 Fred J. VanGelder   was born May 29, 1863.  Fred died December 30, 1916 Willmington, Delaware, at 53 years of age.

VANGELDER -  J. Fred VanGelder passed away suddenly at his home in Wilmington, Delaware on Sunday of appendicitis.

He leaves his wife who was Miss Emma Moss of Canandaigua, two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Charles Hathaway, B. Emerson VanGelder, and Edgar VanGelder, of Wilmington, and Mrs. Charles Gifford, and G. B. VanGelder of Canandaigua.  

                                 He married Emma Moss May 27, 1887.   Emma was born in Hamburg, Germany November 27, 1864.  Emma was the daughter of Frederick Moss and Doris Theege .  Emma died January 28, 1944 Canandaigua, New York, at 79 years of age.[i]  [i]. Canandaigua City clerk office record number 18 on Page 59, stated that she was widowed, husband was Fred VanGelder, and that burial would be in Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington, Deleware. The informant was Mary E. Cole of Chapin, New York.

                                   OBITUARY   -   VANGELDER

Mrs. Emma Moss, VanGelder, 79, Wilmington, Del., died Friday, January 28, 1944, in the Canandaigua Health Home, where she had been a patient for two months.  Born in Germany, she came to this country with her parents when a child and spent her childhood in Canandaigua. She leaves only nieces and a nephew in Ohio.

Following a brief prayer service at the Ahrens and Breen funeral home, Friday evening, conducted by the Rev. Stephen S. Pratt, the remains were taken to Wilmington Del., for funeral services and burial in Silverbrook Cemetery, that city. 

William S.3 VanGelder  was born Pine Bank, New Jersey May 21, 1834.  William died September 01, 1922 at 88 years of age.  His body was interred September 05, 1922 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Wood National Cemetery.  Van Gelder, William S, d. 09/01/1922, CORPL CO I 1ST NY INF, Plot: 24 14, bur.  09/05/1922,

 

George Byron4 VanGelder  was born Monterrey, New York December 25, 1857.  George died September 07, 1941 Clifton Springs, New York, at 83 years of age.

                   He married twice.  He married Elizabeth Ann Wheatley Chapinville, New York, January 26, 1879.

                                                 Elizabeth was born Manchester August 10, 1856.  Elizabeth was the daughter of William Wheatley and Mary Ann Romans .  Elizabeth died March 13, 1922 Canandaigua, New York, at 65 years of age.

Laura was born Medina, NY August 14, 1882.  Laura was the daughter of Samuel Jackson and Mary Belle .  She married Fred Mackey .  Laura died January 01, 1965 at 82 years of age.  Her body was interred 1965 Clifton Springs, New York, Riverview Cemetery.  At 42 years of age Laura became the mother of David Emerson VanGelder Canandaigua, New York, April 22, 1925.

 CHAPIN -   Mr. and Mrs. George VanGelder entertained the following at dinner and a tree on Christmas, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Andrews and three children and Arthur Middlebrook, of Canandaigua town, Mr. and Mrs. William Camp and five children of Cato, Mrs. Mary Cole and George Cowley, Orleans Road, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis VanGelder and three children of Hopewell, Mr. and Mrs. Jay VanGelder and two children of Canandaigua, Mr. and Mrs. Charles VanGelder and four children of Chapin. The occasion was also Mr. VanGelder's birthday.   

                 

Mary Elizabeth5 VanGelder was born in Richmond, New York July 08, 1880.  Mary died October 11, 1960 Canandaigua, New York, at 80 years of age.

                                    MRS.  MARY  E.  COLE

CANANDAIGUA  An 80 year old Chapin woman died suddenly at 5 PM yesterday of a heart attack while riding in a car with her daughter on Main Street here.   Mrs. Mary E. Cole was taken to Thompson Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. She was a lifelong resident of the area.

Mrs. Cole was riding with her daughter, Mrs. Murray Hathaway of Chapin, with whom she had resided.  Mrs. Cole was the widow of Herbert S. Cole who died here in 1952.  She was born in Canandaigua on July 8, 1880, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Wheatley VanGelder. She was a member of Manchester Methodist Church and the WRC.

Surviving besides Mrs. Hathaway is another daughter, Mrs. Arthur Middlebrook of Canandaigua, and one son, George Cole of Clifton Springs, also a brother, Louis VanGelder, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur Andrews, both of Canandaigua, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night.

                                                                  Obituary -  Mrs. Herbert S. Cole 

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cole, 80, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon while riding in a car on Main Street with her daughter, Mrs. Murray Hathaway of Chapin with whom she lived. She was taken to Thompson Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.   A lifelong resident of this area, she was born in the town of Richmond, July 8, 1880, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Wheatley VanGelder.

She was the widow of Herbert S. Cole, who died in 1952. She was a member of the Manchester Methodist Church, the Women's Benefit Corps, the Community Garden Club, and Pioneer Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hathaway and Mrs. Arthur Middlebrook of Canandaigua, a son, George D. Cole of Clifton Springs, two brothers, Louis VanGelder and David VanGelder, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur Andrews, all of Canandaigua RD, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

                                  She married Herbert Stinson Cole Canandaigua, New York, August 24, 1898.[ii]  [ii]. City Clerk office record number 991.

                                                 Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Cole, Chapin, Married 50 Years 

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert S. Cole, well known residents of Chapin, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday at their home. A large group of friends are expected to greet the couple during an open house in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Cole were married at the Methodist parsonage in Canandaigua on August 24, 1898, by Rev. D. D. Campbell, pastor of the church. Miss Helen VanGelder, now Mrs. Arthur Andrews, was her sister's attendant. Albert H. Winter was best man.

Mrs. Cole was the former Miss Mary E. VanGelder, member of an old pioneer Ontario county family. Her father was George B. VanGelder, son of Alfred and Mary Jane VanGelder, pioneer settlers in the Chapin area. Mr. and Mrs. Cole have spent their whole lives in the vicinity of Chapin. They have three children, Mrs. Madeline Hathaway, who resides at home, Mrs. Arthur Middlebrook, Chapin Street, Canandaigua, and George D. Cole of Clifton Springs.

 COLE  -  VANGELDER    At Canandaigua, August 24, 1898, Herbert C. Cole and Miss Marguerite VanGelder, both of Canandaigua.  

                 

Helen Lydia VanGelder was born New York January 31, 1882.  Helen died October 23, 1960 Canandaigua, New York, at 78 years of age.

 Mrs. Helen VanGelder Andrews, 78, widow of Arthur Andrews of Canandaigua RD4, died Saturday night in King's Park, LI.   She died while visiting at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charles Gehres. A lifelong resident of Canandaigua, she was born here January 31, 1882, a daughter of the late George B. and Elizabeth Wheatley VanGelder.

 The family home was on the North Road.  Mr. Andrews died last year.  Mrs. Andrews attended Chapin Methodist Church and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Canandaigua, and National Grange.

Surviving are one son, Frank A. Andrews, Canandaigua, two daughters, Mrs. Lyle Arnold of Canandaigua, and Mrs. Gehres, 11 grand children, and 10 great grandchildren. Her body was interred 1960 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery.

                                                       She married Arthur Andrews Shortsville, New York, September 15, 1900.

                   At 36 years of age Arthur became the father of Anna Mary Andrews Canandaigua, New York, January 07, 1910.
