Local Hunters Find Body of Man Near Littleville -

Robert Williams, Frederick Chrysler and Robert O'Brien, all of Shortsville, found more than they were looking for while hunting Sunday morning. About 10:45 o'clock they neared what is known as Turner's bridge over the Canandaigua Outlet, just south of Littleville, and discovered the lifeless body of a hunter, with his shotgun beside him.

The trio summoned help and then was learned from the Sheriff's office at Canandaigua, that the dead man was John Sanford, 64-year-old resided Clark street, that city. Sanford, had gone hunting about 8 o'clock Saturday morning, had not returned at nightfall and the Sheriff's office was informed of his absence.

Deputies spent almost the entire night hunting for him. Sanford's body was lying partially submerged in shallow water, and Coroner Leon A. Stetson of Canandaigua, who viewed the remains, has issued a verdict of death from natural causes giving the opinion that a heart attack had been responsible. The remains were ordered removed to an undertaking parlors in Canandaigua.

Near the body was Mr. Sanford's hunting dog, a small beagle hound, which had stood vigil since its master had fallen. An attempt was made to catch the dog, but it ran away and  returned home later. A dead duck was also found, which the deceased had shot just before his death and was in the act of carrying it from the waters.

Mr. Sanford was a native of Cheshire and for the past 40 years had been employed by the Rochester Telephone Corporation, first as a lineman and lately as janitor at the Canandaigua exchange.

The survivors are two sons, Merlin S. and Powell Sanford of Canandaigua; a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Sanford, also of Canandaigua; one sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Butler of Canandaigua town, and three brothers, Frank of Rochester, Edward of Penn Yan and Albert Sanford of Geneva; also four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from his late home, conducted by the Rev. George E. Finlay, former pastor of the Canandaigua Baptist Church. The remains will be taken to Cheshire for interment in Pine Bank Cemetery.
