MRS. HANNAH NORTON DIES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS -

Local residents mourn deeply the passing of Mrs. Hannah L. Norton, 93, of Booth street a highly respected member of our community. Death came on Sunday, September 12, following a long illness.

Mrs. Norton was born in Farmington on December 28, 1843, the daughter of George and Jane Brown Payne. She attended district school there, then Macedon Academy and Fort Edward Institute.  She taught several terms of district school in Farmington, was secretary of the first Women's Christian Temperance Union there. Later she became president of die Ontario County W. C. U., and was a life-long member of the County organization.

In 1890 she married Walter Norton of Victor. Shortly after their removal to Shortsville, in 1911, he died.  Mrs. Norton had always maintained a keen interest in the Farmington Friends' meeting, and retained membership in that church throughout her life. In spite of her advanced years, she had a lively interest in current topics, especially politics, prohibition and church activities.

She is survived by five nephews, Walter and Theodore Corrigan of British Columbia, Herbert Padgham of Sunnyside, Washington; George Padgham of Greenfield, Calif., and Irving Payne of Chevy Chase, Md.; also three nieces, Miss Belle Padgham of Shortsville, Mrs. Gertrude Corrigan of British Columbia, and Miss Esther Payne of Tucson, Arizona.

Charles H.Gardner, Pioneer Farmington Resident Dies at 93 - By Theresa M. Gardner

Charles H. Gardner, 93, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 12 at the home of his son, Charles R. Gardner, of Farmington.  Mr. Gardner was born in this town on Oct. 5, 1857 and was a descendant of one of the town's oldest families. He was the youngest son of John W. and Anna B. Gardner.

On Oct. 19, 1882, he was united in marriage to Clara E. Lombard, a schoolmate who had moved from Farmington to Addison, Mich., with her parents, George H. and Clarissa Lombard, in 1874.  Mrs. Gardner died on Jan. 10, 1938.

Mr. Gardner had been engaged in numerous enterprises. When a youth, he worked on the farm by the month in the summer and attended school during the winter.  He learned the carpenter trade and was a successful contractor and builder. He owned and operated a farm on which he built the beautiful home where he died, that has been occupied by his son and family for a number of years.

He served the town as superintendent of highways for 10 years and as justice of the peace for two terms.

AUTHORIZED GENEALOGY - After his retirement in 1918, he undertook the arduous task of compiling the Gardner Genealogy and traced the genealogical tree from 1583 to 1922.  It was printed in book form in 1923 by Walter H. Jenkins, proprietor of a Quaker Printing House in Philadelphia, Pa.

In 1934 he wrote an interesting and detailed history of the Town of Farmington, from the pioneer days of 1788. He also wrote a number of poems to fit different occasions and most of them were printed in various periodicals.

Mr. Gardner was superintendent of the North Farmington Friends' Cemetery, to which he gave his tenderest care, from 1921 to 1946, when he resigned because of his advanced years; but he never lost his loving interest in the fine grounds.

He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends and one of the few "Old-time" Quakers left in this section.

At the last, monthly meeting which was held at the Friends' Church on the evening of Jan. 25, Mr. Gardner read an inspiring history of the "Old-time" Friends, which he had compiled from facts and with which he - was thoroughly familiar.

Mr. Gardner was a man of noble characteristics, genuinely esteemed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His loyalty and kindness, and his great human interest in people, made him a fitting example for the younger generations to follow. He will be deeply missed; but he will be pleasantly and reverently remembered in the community where he spent almost all of his long and useful life and where he was looked upon as a wise counsellor and friend.

He was a member of the Farmington Grange, having joined in 1896; was the possessor of the Hospital Golden Sheaf Certificate for 50 years of membership and was made an honorary life member of the organization. He was also an honorary life member of the WCTU.

Mr. Gardner is survived, by one son and one daughter, Charles R. Gardner of this town and Mrs. Charles A. Rice of Aloquin; eight grandchildren:  Mrs. Lloyd Wells, Mrs. Edward DeBrock and Mrs. Howard DeLano, all of Farmington; Miss Florence M. Greene of Aloquin; Mrs. Harold Davis of Long Island; George H. Greene of Rochester; Walter R. Gardner of Macedon and Harry W. Gardner of Holcomb; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; also several nieces and nephews.

A prayer service was held at the home of his son, Charles R. | Gardner, at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, followed by funeral rites at 2:30 in the Farmington Friends' Church, with Kent R.Larrabee, pastor, officiating. His  remains were placed in the vault of the North Farmington Friends' Cemetery.
