Shortsville Enterprise               Fri                    Oct 31, 1919                        by Dianne Thomas

Oscar Sherman - The death of Oscar Sherman, a resident of Park street, Shortsville, occurred at the General hospital in Rochester on Tuesday, following an illness of about two weeks. He was born in the town of Huron, Wayne county, where he resided until two years ago, at which time he moved to this vicinity. He had been employed as a machinist's helper in the Lehigh Valley yards at Manchester.

Mr. Sherman was married on August 16, 1868, to Miss Jennie Wicks, of Sodus, who survives him. Other survivors are three sons and five daughters, Mrs. Frank Andrews, of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Richard M. Cheetham, of Shortsville; Charles Sherman, of Manchester; Mrs. R. Springer, of Sayre, Pa.; Mrs. Sydney Myers, of North Rose; Dwight and Nettie Sherman, of Shortsville; also one sister, Mrs. Chas. Porter, of Manchester; one brother, John Sherman, of Alton, and eleven grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at his late home on Thursday afternoon, and the interment was made in the Brookside cemetery.

Shortsville Enterprise                      April 13, 1949                      by Dianne Thomas

John Starr was as fine an old gentleman as one could find. He was a shoemaker and cobbler in Shortsville some half-century ago, and his name certainly belongs on the list of our old-time residents who were the "salt of the earth."

It was moving day at 'The Enterprise' , when John Starr came to Shortsville. The Enterprise office had been located on the second floor of the Empire Drill Company office building until Grandfather, looking for more space, rented the building now occupied by Walt Barry's grocery store.

The building, at that time, had two  front display windows with the door way in the center. Grandfather had his inner sanctum in one window; the other was vacant.

Scarcely had the dust of moving day settled when John Starr asked to rent the vacant space. And soon the rhythmic tapping of his hammers was blending with the roar and growl of the presses. He was a quiet, reserved man, not the type to start a conversation.

He worked industriously over his last, occasionally leaning back to shove his spectacles up on his forehead and give out with some dry remark.

He and Grandfather hit it off from the start, which was unusual, for Grandfather's disposition was notably uncertain and the tapping of the cobbler's hammers must have disturbed him when he was writing. Certain it was that other unnecessary noises about the shop were cut short with some caustic comment from the inner sanctum. Perhaps John's hammers played a tune that didn't interrupt the flow of editorial thought.

So placid was John's disposition that Dad, who was a typesetter, decided to show him type lice. The gag of showing type lice to an innocent is as old as the art of printing!  Dad took a column of type and separated it in the middle, filling the intervening space with none-too-clean water. Then he invited John to look.

John was eager to see anything strange. He bent over the type and kept complaining, "Dad bum it, I don't see 'em."

Dad advised him to look more closely for the lice were very tiny insects that scooted around rapidly on the surface of the water. And at last he was in just the right position. Suddenly, Dad pushed hard on the bottom of the column of type and the water erupted, leaping up to splashed all over old John's face and run down his spectacles.

The old fellow slowly straightened up and painstakingly wiped off his glasses, then pushed them up on his forehead. "Well, sir, I'll be dummed," he said. "That's the first time I ever saw type lice." And that was the end of it. He held no malice and never mentioned type lice again.

Mr. Starr had his shop with The Enterprise for over a year, when his health broke down and he was compelled to give up active work. He moved from the village and a few years later he died and his remains were brought back to Shortsville for burial in Brookside Cemetery. By a peculiar quirk of fate, his remains were interred in a lot less than a hundred feet from our family plot.

So today, his monument and Grandfather's monument are neighbors, just the same as the two men were when they both had businesses in the same building over 50 years ago.
