The Naples Record                         Sat        May 23, 1874

At one o'clock, Saturday, May 16, the demise of Edwin A Hulbert was duly announced to the people.  Mr. Hulbert was a resident of Hunt's Hollow, the western part of town and has been a leading light there for quite a half century.  His age was nearly 70 years, and quietly slept out this life only to be taken up in full happiness on the other shore.  For two score years he had been the leader in that section in prayer circles, social circles, and all things for their good.  He will me missed there, and here.  All our old residents will remember him eng in the martial music on every occasion for forty years back; his name had become a household word, in connection with music and everything just and good.

The services of the funeral were held at his home at his late residence, and Rev. J. T. Brownell officiated, assisted his choir.  The occasion was one of deep feeling and lasting remembrance.  His remains were interred in the near his residence, Hunts Hollow (Cemetery).

The Naples Record              July 30,  1880

It is a time of unusual sorrow in Mr. Simeon Wheat's family. The good old mother was buried this week, Mrs. Wheat fell down a flight of stairs, quite seriously injuring her, and poor Mr. Wheat is the suffering victim of a cruel and relentless cancer, which is fast sapping his life.

Mrs. Mapes, who had lived in Hunt's Hollow for a year past, with Simeon Wheat, died very suddenly on Saturday evening, July 24. She had gone to bed as well as usual but Mrs. Wheat hearing a noise in her room went in and found the old lady dying. She lived but a half hour afterward.

Mrs. Mapes was foster mother of Mrs. Wheat and having lost her husband some years ago, finally came to end her days with her adopted daughter.  She was about 79 years of age.  She was buried on Monday at 10 o'clock in the Hunt's Hollow cemetery.  Rev. Mr. Lowell officiating.

Last week, Thursday night while Hiram Wilbur, who lives with his two sons at Phelps, was sitting by the stove, a kerosene lamp on a table behind him exploded.  The burning oil fell on his back, setting fire to his clothes.

The boys, aged 12 and 14, respectively, immediately tore off the clothing and saved their father from a horrible death. His back and side was severely burned. In the meantime the fire had become well started among the furniture and flooring. This the boys subdued with pails of water.
