Military Biography of Dr. Jerome Hadden Coe

This was generously contributed by Wayne Jerome Rogers, a descendant of Dr. Jerome Coe.  Wayne would love to hear from anyone who has more information on the family, and where he was buried.

Dr. Jerome H. Coe enlisted twice, first time at 18 years of age at Oswego, in 1861, as private, Company D, 81st Infrantry; returned because of typhoid, from Chickahominy(sp) campaign.  He held the position of sergeant.

In 1863-64, he taught school in Oswego.

He later re-enlisted in 1864, Company K, 184th New York Infantry, again as a private, but mustered out as a 1st Leut. He held postions as Assistant Provost Marshal at City Point, Va. just before his discharge, and was Capt. Adjuantant (4 mos) of his regiment.

He returned as  a teacher in a Business College, and then bought a book
store in partnership, in Oswego, and worked for the firm. He later became a Doctor, and was President of Syracuse Medical Association, and others as well.

At the time of his death, at age 88, he was a State Medical Examiner.  He was a member of the GAR,  Senior Vice Commander of Root Post, and Honorary President of the Regimental Association in Syracuse.  He was also a poet and historian.
