Quoted From the Co.Historian's Office:

"The County House served as a combination poorhouse, orphanage, nursing home and asylumbetween 1831 and 1922.Inmates well enough to work operated the farm and to some extent supportedthemselves and cared for each other. Inspectorsí reports filed each year withthe CountyLegislature reflect nearly unanimous shock at the wretched conditions the peoplewho lived here were forced to endure."
